Casting misrun

Casting misrun

SAMPLE: Sand casted steel component

ROOT CAUSE: Any one or combination of lack of venting, low pouring temperature, low fluidity or inclusion in sand moulding

“Sand-cast steel component exhibiting various surface cavities. Visual inspection of the underfilled area on the upper edge of the bore section shows fine porosity appearing as either gas porosity or contact with an otherwise degraded sand surface within the mould. Separate sections on the upper surface away from the bore show significant surface cavities with irregular orientations and a relatively smooth inside surface. Possible causes include a lack of venting restricting molten flow to fill the casting, low-temperature core or mould causing low fluidity, or an inclusion inside the mould which has separated when ejected from the mould, known as a scab.”
